history of soccer

The history of soccer traces it origins to ancient Chinese, Greek, Mayan and Egyptian cultures where the universal pastime of kicking a ball was discovered.  To make the game more challenging for the fun of it, some kind of goal where the ball is to be kicked through was invented. This goal may be in the form of a round hole made of concrete attached to a high concrete wall as shown in the ballcourt ruins of Chichen-Itza. Or the goal may simply be a hole in a silk cloth. “A military document found in China attested a game called Cuju, played around the second century B.C. It wasn't soccer per se, but it did involve kicking a leather ball through a small hole in a piece of silk cloth strung between two high poles.” - http://www.soccer-fans-info.com/the-history-of-soccer.html

Another type of goal may be a landmark that everyone in a village has designated as a goal. Each team in the village works its way to hitting the opponent’s landmark while at the same time defending their own. Imagine two mobs of people in a village kicking a ball from one landmark to the other, and this was taken very seriously. Thus, there are accounts of the violence sometimes associated with this game in its earlier, more brutal days. No, they didn’t have yellow cards back then.
