Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge Pictures

Where are the Wichita Mountains located? Near Lawton, Oklahoma and the small town of Medicine Park, Oklahoma. Get directions from the Wichita Mountains National Refuge Home.

What is the Wichita Mountains? "The 59,020 acre Refuge hosts a rare piece of the past - a remnant mixed grass prairie, an island where the natural grasslands escaped destruction because the rocks underfoot defeated the plow." History here.

What can you see at the Wichita Mountains? Buffalo, armadillos, turtles and other wild animals. You can go see the prairie dog town, drive up Mount Scott or hike to Forty Foot Hole. For more information such as where to go hiking, stop at the Visitor's Center where you can watch a video, walk through the museum, shop the gift shop and get a map of the area to prioritize places you want to see. You can easily find the Visitor's Center as it is along the main road (State Highway 49) that cuts through the central part of these mountains. The Visitor's Center is at the northeast quadrant of the intersection of State Highways 49 and 115.
