 Once in a while, you
wonder where your next vacation will be.
If you choose to go see mount rushmore, a good place to stay is the
town of Keystone, South Dakota, which is very convenient because it is
literally at the foot of the mountain and it’s a short drive up the
mountain to go see the four famous faces of George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
Gutzon Borglum, the
sculptor, chose these men to represent significant times of birth and
growth of this great country, The United States of America.
If you want to just
drive by while on your way to somewhere else, you will not be disappointed
to take Highway 244 (off of Highway 385 on the west or Highway 16 from the
east) that will give you a great view of the four faces.
Just make sure you don’t hit the guard rails and fall off the
mountain.
You will be given
beautiful views of the Black Hills while there.
If you have children, they may be treated to the very first
chipmunk they have ever seen in their lives, along with seeing the
memorial, of course.
At the bookstore/gift
shop, there are puzzles, buffalo puppets and small books that feature, for
example, poems by Abraham Lincoln. It
turns out this 16th President wrote poems, even if there were
only three.
Overall, the trip is
worthwhile because the whole region is geared for visitors and is very
family oriented with things to do for adults as well as the kids.
In Keystone you can
take your kids to the Alpine Slide. You
take a ski lift up the hill and at the top, you can have grilled
hamburgers, buffalo burgers or hot dogs while enjoying a view of Mount
Rushmore. Then you slide
down. You do have the option
of ski lifting back down if you don’t want to slide.
Wherever you go near
the memorial, at your hotel, restaurant or souvenir shop, there is a map
showing attractions in the area that you will find very helpful in
choosing activities.
