mt rushmore is located
in the Black Hills in South Dakota. Gutzon
Borglum, the sculptor, took weeks looking for a site in these granite
hills and found this mountain large enough as he came up with the idea of
sculpting the Presidents' faces.
The mountain bears the
name of a lawyer from New York who was in South Dakota in the 1800s.
A century later, a famous memorial carries his name.
Who are the Presidents
featured and why? From left
to right: George Washington,
Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln.
Washington for the birth, Jefferson for the expansion, Roosevelt
for preserving wild lands into national parks, and Lincoln for joining the
country together.
For the visitor, there
is no admission fee, as requested by the sculptor, but there is a parking
fee that is good for the calendar year in hopes of encouraging you to
visit the memorial more than once.
Towns nearby are
Keystone and Rapid City to the East and Custer to the West.
These towns have plenty to do so you have to pick and choose.
Highway 16 between Keystone and Rapid City have plenty of things to
do such as the Animal Farm, Reptile place, Maze, Dinner and Cowboy
show—one advertises seeing pieces from set of the movie, Dances With
Wolves.
There is also the
Petrified Forest in Piedmont, a short drive north from Keystone and the
Badlands Petrified Forest off of I-90.
What you will end up
appreciating in addition to seeing the memorial is the Black Hills and
surrounding regions.
