EYE-SOPPING FLAGS
Imagine everyone
waving white flags
shouting let wisdom be
let the Republi-cans
can everything
whatever they want
and in the end
watch the Speaker cry

STATE OF THE ONION
Inside a future crockpot
for a wonderful stew for all.
It would help if the bulb could be chopped
without a Speaker prone to crying.
The President turns on the knob
not on low or high but on win.

In this month, when love is at the forefront, here are some poems:
I AM OFFERING THIS POEM
I am offering this poem to you,
since I have nothing else to give.
Keep it like a warm coat
when winter comes to cover you,
or like a pair of thick socks
the cold cannot bite through,
I love you,
I have nothing else to give you,
so it is a pot full of yellow corn
to warm your belly in winter,
it is a scarf for your head, to wear
over your hair, to tie up around your face,
I love you,
Keep it, treasure this as you would
if you were lost, needing direction,
in the wilderness life becomes when mature;
and in the corner of your drawer,
tucked away like a cabin or hogan
in dense trees, come knocking,
and I will answer, give you directions,
and let you warm yourself by this fire,
rest by this fire, and make you feel safe
I love you,
It’s all I have to give,
and all anyone needs to live,
and to go on living inside,
when the world outside
no longer cares if you live or die;
remember,
I love you.
- Jimmy Santiago Baca
A GIFT
Who is that creature
and who does he want?
Me, I trust. I do not
attempt to call out his
name for fear he will
tread on me. What do
you believe, he asks.
That we all want to be
alone, I reply, except when
we do not; that the world
was open to my sorrow
and ate most of it; that
today is a gift and I am
ready to receive you.
- Kathryn Starbuck
EARLY MORNING
Still dark outside
the sun dawned inside anyway
forcing me to get up and write
about what I asked
about ends and beginnings
touching so that the circle created
can be let to roll on with the universe
going about its way
when I thought you had left
giving momentum to wish us joy
like a child tumbling
motioning it seems
that misunderstandings need
a meeting to round off the edges
would you agree
that getting hold of you
is tornado impossible
reminds me of the crowd
encircling you like a storm
until you stopped to bow down
making everything slow motion
and quieting all the noise
as if you’re about to place
a loving phone call
waiting for a ring
your silence
isn’t becoming for me
forever is ready
to get on with life
should we meet
because
you made it so
may we hold in love and peace
to set aside shyness and fear
should we not meet
may we let go
in love and peace
here and now

GOODBYE
a row of chairs arranged on stage
the special one at the end for you
wood ornately carved
room awaits and feels warm
hanging from the walls are rugs
images of peace surrounding
the floor where i sit on a pillow
an announcement is made
you couldn’t stay for this
reading, an emergency
of some kind is the reason
i wondered who would sit
on your chair
as i sought the soothing notes
of a harp and the love
that learned to play it
the poets take their seats
none dared to choose yours
i read the program again
with your name on it
i didn’t want to believe
you weren’t there
i didn’t want to believe
as i looked at your empty chair.

FREEDOM
I am free
I can go anywhere
And everywhere without
Anyone bothering me
Dear God
Because of your love
You know the truth
I am free
