In Jack Kornfield’s book, After the Ecstasy, The Laundry, there is a section with the title, “The Middle Path.” The following are excerpts from this section:

“The middle path embraces opposites. It rests between them, acknowledging both truths, caught by neither side. In this way we can see from one perspective that human life is suffering, with its inevitable string of losses culminating in sickness, aging, and death. Yet from another perspective it is also grace—filled with gifts and blessings, expressing a divine beauty. Our very suffering can be seen as the grace that brings us to compassion, surrender, and humility.”

“Awakening dissolves the labels we have put on our experience.”

“The wise heart brings compassion to imperfection itself.”

“The wise heart is at peace with the way things are.”

“The holy qualities of understanding, humility, and a patient caring are our gifts. Our body, speech, and mind become like the Tao, ‘content with the changing of the seasons.’”

“When we accept our place in the mandala (‘an image, often complex, which represents the great circle of existence, sacred wholeness, a complete world’) of the whole, we come back to just where we are. And in this is found joy, ease, simplicity, and courage, and what T.S. Eliot calls the freedom ‘to care and not to care.’ The following chapters illustrate the flowering of this wholeness, of coming home to ourselves.”

Oh, the creativity of a blouse
a new way
to halve a button
lotus a sleeve
hypotenuse a pocket

Oh, the beauty of a dress
a new way
to neckline print
shoulder silk
waist metallic

Oh, the novelty of design
a new way
to try on possibilities
wear visions
fit body-respect
like the runways
at Local-Mart
