VOTE-TIME STORY
Once upon a time two
Presidential candidates were asked to drive their cars to their next
debate that is two miles away.
One looks at his
thirteen cars and wonders which one to drive from which of his seven
houses. He points to one car
and suspends that one, and suspends another, and suspends a third, and so
on before finally settling on the fastest sports car.
About a mile away the
car gets a flat tire and not only that, it runs out of gas.
So from his cell phone he calls his friend and asks him to bring
another one of his thirteen cars. He
also calls his other friend to fill up his gas tank.
The other Presidential
candidate opens the door to his one car and backs out of his driveway.
However, also about a mile away, his car gets a flat tire and also
runs out of gas. So from his
cell phone he calls two friends and asks them what to do.
One friend says to replace the flat tire with the spare and the
other says to put one foot in front of the other.
This Presidential
candidate thanks his friends for their advice.
Self-awareness tells him that it would be faster to walk briskly to
the debate rather than take the time to fix the flat, something he
realizes is not his strength. So
he starts walking.
Eventually both
candidates arrive at the debate.
Some in the audience
praise the one who arrives by car, and are awed by the expensiveness of
his car. If only, they, too,
could have that many cars in their seven garages.
And if they don’t in reality, they want to identify with it.
Some in the audience
praise the one who arrives by foot, and are awed by his comfortable shoes.
If only, they too, could be as comfortable in their own shoes.
And if they don’t in reality, they want to identify with it.
The debate begins.
One says, “I believe
in the American worker.” (What
the audience may hear: Because
I know the American worker will work 24/7 to pay for my spending-spree
deficits, for wars that guarantee victory no matter what cost, for my
economic policy bailouts, and
for loans from other countries, when my term ends).
The other says, “I
believe in the American worker.” (What
the audience may hear: Because
I am closer to knowing and valuing the American worker’s money and will
work to give them back benefits for their taxes).
The debate ends.
Go vote for the
candidate who took the footpath.
