When was the Washington monument built? It was built from July 4, 1848 to December 6, 1884, a span of 36 years. Delays were caused by lack of funding as well as the Civil War. The monument became available for visitors in October 9, 1888. The four-year difference between completion and public opening was due to the fact that the interior still had to be finished.
